SMART program expands library capabilities in New Zealand

Members who are using SMART plastic cards now have access to more than 500,000 library items from 23 libraries across New Zealand. The libraries that are participating in the program are located in Porirua City, Masterton District, Kapiti Coast, Hutt City, the Wellington Institute of Technology and Whitireia, according to Scoop.

The program has been in development for the past year and is free to join, Leslie Clague, the manager of the Kapiti Coast District Libraries, told the news source.

"It's been a busy and exciting year and we're extremely proud to be offering the SMART card to our customers and the enhanced services it provides," she continued.

The next phase of the SMART program will be to have the libraries add new devices to their shelves, including ebooks, additional Web 2.0 products and radio frequency identification devices, Scoop reported.

According to New Zealand on the Web, 99 percent of the nation is literate, which means they can benefit from using the SMART cards. While not all residents of the country will participate in the program, children and students are encouraged to become members of SMART so they can advance their learning experience.
