The Jamaica Urban Transit Company is encouraging students to use new smartcards when traveling
The Jamaica Urban Transit Company is encouraging commuters to use new smartcards to make their traveling safer and more efficient.
The new smartcards will be especially useful for students, who will be starting school within the next few weeks.
Reginald Allen, the corporate communications manager at JUTC, said the new plastic cards offer “security and convenience both for the parents and students.”
Allen said the new smartcards also allow parents to have more oversight of their children’s finances and whereabouts. Every time a student uses his or her card, the information is logged onto an online database, which parents can monitor. Thus, parents can load a specific amount of money on the smartcards and be certain their child is using the credits for only their intended purpose.
A similar smartcard system was recently implemented by the largest school bus operator in Dubai, United Arab Emirates to ensure the safety of school children as they go to and from school. The new smartcard technology will also allow school officials to monitor the speed and braking skills of each bus driver.
