After a number of recent debacles over its public transportation system, which currently employs tokens as a method of payment, the city of Toronto is considering implementing a smart card fare collection system. The smart cards are being tested and would be launched in 2013.

Current forms of tickets and passes will be replaced with smart cards by the year 2013. The smart cards will be pre-loaded and scanned in front of an electronic card reader for payment.
