Smartcards will be used for healthcare in Antigua

In St. John's, Antigua, the Medical Benefits Scheme will issue all of its beneficiaries and employees personalized smart cards. The plastic cards will be in place by the end of October and will change the way that the organization conducts business, according to the Antigua Observer.

The plastic ID cards will have a photograph of the individual as well as other general information including names and signatures. The cards will be able to be used by beneficiaries to access prescriptions while securing and recording visits to healthcare facilities, the news source reported.

Health care providers, patients, and employees will be issued the plastic cards within the next few months. While the cards are meant to ease the transaction process, the main concern is security, by authenticating both beneficiaries and providers during the prescription process, the Observer asserted.

According to the MBS website, card users can also benefit from receiving free medical assistance, including X-rays, drugs, laboratory tests and other exams and services. By using smartcards, healthcare providers can be sure that patients receive the proper treatment.
